根据这个传说，五羊石像由岭南著名雕塑艺术家尹积昌、陈本宗、孔繁纬创作。为了创作出更接近生活的逼真的羊的形象，孔繁伟和陈本宗还特意跑到华南农业大学的农场体验生活—看真实的羊。主创尹积昌先生更是亲自在雕塑院养了几头山羊，日夜观察山羊们的饮食起居表现。
According to this legend, the Wuyang stone statue was created by Yin Jichang, Chen Benzong and Kong Fanwei, famous sculptors in Lingnan. In order to create a more realistic image of sheep closer to life, Kong Fanwei and Chen Benzong also went to the farm of South China Agricultural University to experience life - to see real sheep. Mr. Yin Jichang, the founder, raised several goats in the sculpture yard himself, and observed their diet and living performance day and night.
陈本宗回忆当年创作，坦诚地说，五只羊的领头公羊是时代产物。1956年，广州人民美术社(现广州雕塑院的前身)接到指示，要创作一个能代表广州市形象的标志性雕塑。其时正值大跃进，所有的作品都必须有领头的，而五只羊的领头者就是高高在上、嘴叼稻穗的领头羊。设计方案最终出炉后，孔繁伟一个人前往北京请打石队，这支来自北京雕塑工厂的工人曾经雕过“人民英雄纪念碑”。

When the design was finally put out, Kong Fanwei went to Beijing alone to invite a stone team. This worker from the Beijing sculpture factory once sculpted the "Monument to the People's Heroes".
